Lena is the strong matriarch of the Younger family, charged with raising her family in a cramped but clean apartment. Her son Walter Lee is a chauffeur, but his intelligence and ambition far surpass his station in life, breeding in him a short fuse and an impulsive personality. Walter’s younger sister Beneatha is a college student seeking a career in medicine. She divides her time between studies and social activism, much to the chagrin of Walter.
