When a stray dog appears at Mattie Rigsbee’s door, she tells her son that she has as much business keeping this dog as walking across Egypt. The dog appears, and though he catches her heart, she calls the dogcatcher. A letter brings Wesley Benfield into the story and into Mattie’s life.
