In the mid-eighties, the Nicols family learned that their 13-year-old son Henry contracted the HIV virus from a blood transfusion. They coped with the illness in fearful silence until Henry, in his senior year, decided to go public. In order to earn his Eagle Scout Badge, Henry mounted an AIDS awareness campaign by speaking to student assemblies. Henry’s courage taught their neighbors, their community and ultimately much of the nation, to treat AIDS victims with respect, support and compassion.
