Gabrielle Van Der Mar gives up her worldly life for that of a nun. Adopting her new life as Sister Luke, she moves to a convent in the Congo, where she is disappointed to learn she will only minister to Europeans. Her vows are constantly and harshly tested: by her violent and primitive surroundings, by a handsome young doctor, and by a life of servitude.
